I design clothes inspired by a heretic.
You know Descartes? The guy who said, “I think therefore I am.” Yeah, well, he was a coward. He claimed all living things are just natural machines with no soul––except humans. Humans definitely have a soul, he said. Because he didn’t want to get burned at the stake. Which, is understandable, but also, grow up.
In 1747 a French philosopher named Julien Offray de La Mettrie said, fuck it, we’re all just meat machines. Even humans. And he wrote down his argument in a book called Man, A Machine, basically making fun of anyone who believed in a soul.
He said we were all just automata: complicated machines running on loops.
Anyway, I started designing clothes last year and put out my first piece last fall. More to come later this year. Every piece comes with a bootleg version of Man, A Machine I designed.
